LWCOPD operate three Pulmonary Wellbeing Exercise Groups at the Gosport Leisure Centre every week.
Exercise is the best thing for COPD, it keeps you mobile and improves lung function.
The exercise sessions are designed to aid breathing techniques and strengthen pulmonary muscles, to increase levels of oxygen we take in, with improved breathing techniques. The exercises will improve strength, stamina and balance.
Do not let the word “Exercise” put you off, after all is said and done, that walk round to the newsagents, that bit of gardening, or even just putting out the bins, is all exercise – the main thing is to keep ourselves motivated and moving. Our groups do just that and you are encouraged to only do what you can manage.
It is not competitive and we all keep an eye out for each other and of course have a good old laugh, especially at some of the music the trainers play – ’70’s disco has nothing on it!
Contact us for more information, or contact your GP/Pulmonary Nurse. A referral is required to join the group, all referrals for a COPD assessment need to be sent through the Gosport Leisure Centre portal. All surgeries in Fareham and Gosport have the portal access. The surgeries can call 02392 534950 and ask for a member of the Healthy Communities team if they need a link sent for the portal. Or they can use the following email address: exercisereferralgosport@pfpleisure.org and it can be sent via email. The contact will be the Healthy Communities team at the Gosport Leisure Centre.
The exercise sessions are also open to carers of COPD patients, to enable home exercises.
The Exercise sessions take place at Gosport Leisure Centre on:
MONDAY – 12:00 – 13:30
WEDNESDAY – 12:00 – 13:30
FRIDAY – 12:00 – 13:30
Cost is £3.00 per session.
